Actress, model, singer—is there anything Razane Jammal can’t do? Now, the Lebanese-British star is adding author to her impressive, ever-growing CV. Known for her role as Lyta Hall in Netflix’s adaptation of The Sandman, Jammal has debuted a picture book for children titled Lulu and Blu.

The book, illustrated by Lebanese artist Sasha Haddad, follows the story of Lulu, a little vegetarian lioness who doesn’t quite fit in. She feels misunderstood and lonely until she meets Blu, a friendly fish with a very different worldview. Somehow, despite their wildly opposite lives, the two become best friends.

It’s a tale that’s as delightful for bedtime as it is layered with life lessons. And while it’s written for children aged six and up, Lulu and Blu is one of those rare picture books that adults might find themselves sneaking off to read solo.

“This book is a celebration of the idea that friendship can blossom in the most unexpected places,” says Jammal. “It is only when you embrace your most authentic self that you are able to find the most meaningful connections.”

Available in both English and Arabic, the book is launching on June 25, and will be stocked at Virgin Megastore and Antoine in Lebanon, Bookworm in the UAE, Diwan in Egypt, and online via Amazon.

The release comes at a busy time for the Beirut-born multihyphenate, who rose to prominence with her breakthrough performance in the 2010 film Carlos. The 37-year-old is currently filming Lion (how fitting!) alongside Mohamed Ramadan. Directed by Mohamed Diab—the Egyptian filmmaker behind Moon Knight— the film follows the story of Ali bin Muhammad Al-Farsi (portrayed by Ramadan). After being sold into slavery, Ali rises to lead a powerful revolt of enslaved Africans against the Abbasid army, sparking one of the most significant uprisings of the time.

It’s a heavy, politically charged story about rebellion and power, worlds away from a lioness and a fish becoming best friends. But that’s exactly what makes Jammal so unique. Whether she’s acting or writing, she isn’t sticking to any one lane, and quite frankly, she doesn’t need to.
