Already a force to be reckoned with in the music industry, it seems DJ Snake now wants to swap the turntables for the director’s chair. This week, the French-Algerian artist helmed a project of a new kind, a short-movie, titled Patience (Sabali), which explores the themes of exile, migration, and belonging in sonic and cinematic form.
Doubling as the music video for his remix of Amadou & Mariam’s iconic 2008 track Sabali, the 11-minute-long project probes how culture is carried across borders, how identity evolves through displacement, and how music can serve as both a vessel of memory and a bridge between worlds. Soundtracked by Snake’s remix—yet punctuated with extended silences that invite reflection on the imagery unfolding on screen—the film creates a meditative rhythm, allowing the viewer to sit with the emotional weight of the topics while taking in all the emotions and nuances etched into each frame.
Produced between France, Senegal, and Algeria, Patience was directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Valentin Guiod, with the precious help of multi-award-winning actor Omar Sy, who takes on the role of a father grappling with the challenges of migration, and of course, Amadou and Mariam.
Not far from reaching the half a million view benchmark, the short film has already received praise from prestigious institutions and publications, including at the Berlin Music Video Awards, as well as a nomination in the Grand Angle section at Côté Court festival in France.
At the intersection of music and cinema, this poignant rendition of Sabali breathes new visual life into Amadou & Mariam’s track, whose original video had grown outdated with the years. Following Amadou’s passing in April this year, the film stands as a powerful tribute, one that honors his legacy with all the depth, beauty, and reverence it deserves.
