Home to one of the richest civilisations the world has ever witnessed, Iran has always been an art hub of its own, and it would be naive to think that it is no longer the case.
The nation’s creative scene might be low-key, but a plethora of artists have made it their personal mission to shed light onto their homecountry’s rich culture. And we’ve decided to put the spotlight on seven photographers doing exactly just that.

Part-Iranian and part-Algerian, photographer Raman adopts a street-oriented lens to document the dynamic nature of culture. Often challenging the reductive notion of “subcultures”, his work presents these communities as integral and living expressions of identity. Sometimes behind the camera and other times in front of it, it is quite hard to figure who 5ahel really is and the range to which her talent spans on. Content Creator, photographer, and image maker at the same time, the creative makes use of her surrounding and everyday products to showcase her artistic challenges playing with perception, food and colours to picture her mind.
Bea Dero

Bea Dero knows what it’s like to grow up without representation. A second-generation British-Iranian, her works focusses on changing that status-quo by amplifying voices and stories that reflect communities like her own.
“Growing up, I felt embarrassed about where I was from because I didn’t see people who looked like me in the films I watched or the girl-talk magazines I read. The only context in which I saw people who resembled me was at family gatherings. I thought that in order to succeed, I had to hide my heritage and assimilate to the girls I saw in films and TV shows,” she told MILLE in a past interview. “Through my work, I aim to show that being a blend of cultures is something to be proud of. I hope to continue exploring this through my own lens, highlighting how multi-faceted each individual is, rather than boxing or grouping everyone with similar heritages together. The more work I create, the more space there is for this narrative to evolve,” she then-added.
