When Hermès announced that Grace Wales Bonner would be taking over as Creative Director of Men’s Ready-to-Wear, it didn’t just make fashion news. It made history. The London-born designer is officially the first Black woman to ever spearhead a luxury fashion house, stepping into a role previously held by Véronique Nichanian, who led the division for more than three decades. Her first collection will debut in January 2027, and though details are still under wraps, one thing is certain, Hermès is entering an exciting new era.

Pierre-Alexis Dumas, the brand’s General Artistic Director, described her appointment as a meeting of minds, praising her “take on contemporary fashion, craft, and culture” and how it will “contribute to shaping Hermès men’s style.” For Wales Bonner, it’s a dream realized. “I am deeply honored to be entrusted with the role,” she said in a statement. “It’s a dream realized to embark on this new chapter, following in a lineage of inspired craftspeople and designers.” The move feels fitting for Hermès, a brand that has always favored quiet mastery over trend-chasing. And if there’s one designer who embodies that kind of slow, thoughtful approach to fashion, it’s her.

Wales Bonner has been redefining what menswear can be since launching her namesake label in 2014, right after graduating from Central Saint Martins. Born to a Jamaican father and English mother, she grew up between two worlds, a duality that would go on to shape her creative lens. Her clothes are grounded in tailoring but often infused with poetry, philosophy, and personal history. They challenge stereotypes about masculinity and elegance, asking questions about identity and belonging without needing to spell them out. Her references range from Pan-Africanism and Rastafarian spirituality to European modernism, and she treats each collection less like a seasonal drop and more like a cultural conversation.

She’s also quietly built one of the most respected brands in British fashion. Within a few years of launching, she won the LVMH Prize and went on to receive the CFDA Award for International Men’s Designer of the Year in 2021 and British Menswear Designer of the Year in 2024. Collaborations with Adidas and curated exhibitions at the Serpentine Galleries proved she’s as comfortable in the art world as she is in luxury retail. But she’s never been loud about her success, allowing her work to speak for itself.

That’s what makes this Hermès moment so interesting. On paper, the pairing makes sense. Both value craftsmanship, restraint, and cultural continuity. But Wales Bonner also brings a depth that could push Hermès’ menswear into new territory, one where references to jazz, literature, and Caribbean sound systems can sit comfortably alongside impeccable suiting and hand-stitched leather.

There are also the smaller, lesser-known things that make her who she is. Below, we’ve compiled seven lesser-known and obscure facts about Grace Wales Bonner.

1. She writes before she designs.
Each collection begins as a research document: a reading list, an essay, a set of philosophical notes. Her debut collection “Ebonics” drew from academic texts on Black language; her 2019 show was inspired by Ishmael Reed’s Mumbo Jumbo. Fashion, for her, is a literary act as much as a visual one.

2. Her color palette stems from a memory in Jamaica.
She once described noticing a “rust-colored berry against green leaves” while visiting the Rio Grande River— a visual flash that became a touchstone for her approach to tone and contrast. For Wales Bonner, color is emotional archaeology.

3. She’s obsessed with sound.
Beyond her Lovers Rock and dancehall references, she’s fascinated by experimental and devotional music, often collaborating with composers and sound artists to stage her shows as immersive rituals. She once said she’s interested in “how sound can charge objects with meaning.”

4. She almost became a historian.
Before choosing fashion, she considered pursuing history or fine art. Her academic background still shapes her approach: she once submitted a 10,000-word dissertation on “Black rhythmicality,” linking jazz, literature, and visual art.

5. She sees fashion as a spiritual practice.
In interviews, she’s described clothing as a form of offering. As something sacred rather than purely commercial. Her collections often reference prayer, healing, or ancestry, positioning the act of dressing as a ritual of remembrance.

6. She’s a morning person.
The designer starts her days early, preferring quiet hours before the city wakes up. She meditates, reads, and walks before heading to her East London studio. Those still hours, she’s said, are when ideas find her.

7. She keeps her teenage notebooks.
Somewhere in her studio are stacks of journals filled with poetry, sketches, and song lyrics from her teens. They serve as a reminder, she’s said, of “where the curiosity started.”
