Ralph Lauren’s connection to the fight against breast cancer runs deep. In the late ’80s, he lost his dear friend, Washington Post fashion editor Nina Hyde, to the disease. That loss became the catalyst for one of fashion’s longest-running philanthropic efforts— the Pink Pony initiative— which, for the past 25 years, has supported cancer research, screenings, early diagnosis, and treatment around the world.
Every October, the brand turns pink. Literally. Stores glow in fuchsia, Ralph’s Coffee offers special-edition treats, and pink pony logos replace the classic navy ones on shirts and caps all in support of cancer care and prevention. But this year, the movement stretched far beyond New York or London. It reached Dubai, where dozens of people showed up at Kite Beach early in the morning on October 24, ready to walk in solidarity, all dressed in signature pink polos.
More than a photo-opp, After the walk, guests were invited for free cancer screenings courtesy of Pink Caravan, the UAE-based initiative by Friends of Cancer Patients. The screenings were a sobering but necessary reminder that breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women in the region. According to the World Health Organization, it accounts for almost one-third of all female cancers in the Middle East— and late diagnoses are still alarmingly frequent due to lack of awareness and stigma around early screening.

This collaboration between Ralph Lauren and Pink Caravan exemplifies a growing shift in how global fashion brands engage with local communities, moving beyond symbolic gestures to create tangible impact. In Dubai, 100 percent of proceeds from Pink Pony products, including the classic Twill Ball Cap and Cable-Knit Hoodie, are being directed to Pink Caravan to fund cancer awareness programs and patient care.
What’s more, from October 25 to 30, Ralph Lauren will host a series of Pink Pony wellness classes at Paus on Al Wasl Road, where every dirham raised will go directly to Pink Caravan.
The Dubai walk is part of a global lineup of Pink Pony activations that span continents, from New York and Beverly Hills to London and Melbourne.
In addition to co-founding the Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research at Georgetown University Hospital in memory of his friend, the American designer also helped launch Fashion Targets Breast Cancer with the Council of Fashion Designers of America, an industry-wide campaign that rallied the fashion world around one cause: awareness and action.
Those early efforts laid the groundwork for what would become the Pink Pony initiative. For nearly three decades, it reimagined the brand’s iconic polo player in pink and turned a global luxury label into an active force in the fight against cancer. Since its inception, Pink Pony has supported research, early detection, treatment, and care across the world, from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Ralph Lauren Center in Harlem to the Royal Marsden’s Ralph Lauren Research Wing in London.
