Turns Out, Never Marrying Could Come With Major Health Risks

Turns out your parents might have been onto something this whole time. Not about that random engineer they tried to set you up with in 2017, but about the institution of marriage itself.

A recent study published in Cancer Research Communications looked at more than four million cancer cases in the United States and found that people who have never been married are significantly more likely to develop cancer than those who have. Never-married men showed around a 68 percent higher rate, while women who never married came in even higher, at roughly 85 percent. The researchers found that rates of cervical cancer in women who had never been married were nearly three times higher than those who had, which is… not the kind of statistic you want to accidentally stumble upon while actively avoiding yet another family gathering.

Of course, before every auntie adds this to her arsenal, it is worth saying that marriage itself is not some magical shield against disease. You do not suddenly become immune to anything the moment you get married, and the study does not claim that. What it does suggest is that everything surrounding marriage, rather than the status itself, plays a significant role. Still, it is hard not to read this and immediately picture your mom quietly feeling vindicated in the background.

Marriage comes with a structure that can feel overwhelming at times, but also oddly functional. You are no longer operating solo. There is someone who notices when you have been “fine” for a little too long, someone who questions your habit of ignoring symptoms, and someone who will insist you get things checked instead of letting you spiral into denial.

Left alone, it is very easy to convince yourself that nothing is wrong. A lingering cough becomes “just the AC,” constant fatigue becomes “burnout,” and anything slightly concerning gets postponed indefinitely. Meanwhile, a spouse, or even an in-law with strong opinions, is far less likely to let that slide without commentary.

The study points to exactly this kind of dynamic. Married individuals tend to have better health habits overall and are more likely to seek medical care and regular screenings. Early detection ends up doing most of the heavy lifting here, which is far less romantic than the idea of marriage saving your life, but far more realistic. The study may be based on U.S. data, but the logic travels easily. Having people around you who notice when something is off, push you to get checked, and refuse to let things slide is not exactly a Western concept.

The takeaway? You don’t need to panic and agree to the next proposal that comes your way, but having people around you who pay attention, push you, and occasionally annoy you into doing the responsible thing actually matters more than you might think. Which, unfortunately, is exactly the kind of point your parents have been trying to make all along.
