Having recently made headlines for reverting to Islam, Grammy-award-winning rapper Lil Durk, born Dirk Derrick Banks, has just been announced as a headliner for an upcoming charity concert in support of Palestine. Last month, the 31-year-old MC stunned the international hip-hop community by taking the shahada and changing his name to Mustafa Abdul Malak, reflecting his newfound alignment with Islamic beliefs and values. Having pledged to speak well and do good in line with Quranic teachings, his upcoming live appearance seems to embody that spirit.

From an Instagram story that was temporarily shared to his 15.6M followers, the chart-topping singer revealed he will be performing live in his hometown Chicago, to rally support and cast a light on the suffering of Palestinians in the Occupied Strip. Joined by Palestinian-American comedian Mo Amer, Palestinian-Canadian singer-songwriter Nemahsis, hip-hop legend Common, amongst others, the holistic event aims to put Palestine center stage while using the power of music and comedy to raise awareness about the ongoing crisis.
Led by the Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN), a Chicago-based nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people of color impacted by social issues— “A Benefit Concert For Gaza” will fling its doors open on Oct. 6 at the Ramova Theatre, with tickets retailing at a starting price-point of $35.

“IMAN and community partners are coming together in the spirit of peace, justice, and unity for a gathering dedicated to creating connections and communal healing, while raising desperately needed support for families in Gaza,” organizers wrote on their official Instagram account.
According to the event’s official description, all proceeds are expected to be transferred to support humanitarian relief efforts in Gaza starting from World Central Kitchen— a non-profit organization that provides food relief— and Anera, a non-governmental organization that provides humanitarian and development aid to the Middle East, specifically the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, and Jordan.
