El Gouna is once again rolling out the red carpet. From October 16 to 24, the coastal town will host the 8th edition of the El Gouna Film Festival (GFF), and if this morning’s press conference was anything to go by, the week promises to be more than just a showcase of cinema.

Since its launch in 2017, GFF has positioned itself as more than a glamorous pitstop on the festival circuit. With its guiding theme Cinema for Humanity, it has steadily carved a reputation as a hub for cultural exchange, dialogue, and empathy—It’s hard not to remember that just two years ago, in 2023, GFF’s 6th edition was postponed in solidarity with Palestine, an act that deeply reflects the festival’s values. We also can’t forget the festival’s efforts to revive Sudanese cinema. Through restored short films, GFF, in partnership with the Sudanese Film Group (SFG), resurrected works that confront racism, explore nature, and reflect social themes.

The press conference was a star-studded affair in its own right. In attendance were the festival’s heavyweights—founders Naguib and Samih Sawiris, actress Yousra, artistic director Marianne Khoury, and Amr Mansi, the festival’s executive director—alongside government officials and international partners, with Egyptian actress Nardine Farag hosting.

This year’s program is ambitious: around 70 handpicked films spanning feature narratives, documentaries, and shorts from across the globe. But the real evolution is happening at the CineGouna Forum. Now in its 8th year, the industry arm of the festival is set to expand significantly, with more than 35 events—think workshops, talks, and roundtables—featuring leading voices from Egyptian and international cinema.

The numbers speak volumes: a record-breaking 290 submissions poured in for CineGouna’s funding program, with 20 standout projects in development or post-production selected to participate. For a festival barely a decade old, that kind of traction cements GFF as a serious player in the regional and international film landscape.

And of course, no festival is complete without star power. Expect a constellation of international actors, directors, and producers descending on El Gouna’s shores—not only to walk the carpet but to share insights, exchange ideas, and support the next generation of filmmakers. A particular spotlight this year will be on emerging talent, with a slate of awards designed to nurture creativity and bold new voices.

At a time when the world feels increasingly fractured, El Gouna Film Festival is doubling down on its mission: presenting high-quality cinema that sparks empathy, spreads values of peace and tolerance, and proves—once again—that the screen can be a bridge, not a border.
